Five things to keep in mind as you start the new year

Many people have mixed feelings towards the new year. Some see it as an opportunity to start over — the chance to reassess where their life is heading, set goals, and start over with their best foot forward. Others insist that stressing about it too much is an easy way to psych yourself out and that the best thing you can do is treat it as just another day. 


Regardless of your thoughts on the holiday and your place in life, New Year’s is still an excellent time to make some changes. To help you do that, here are five things to keep in mind as you start the new year. 


1. Lofty New Year’s resolutions are overrated 

Too many people use New Year’s as the time to set lofty, unachievable resolutions. From wanting to “get fit” or “eat healthily” to hoping to find your significant other, it’s tough to see these goals to fruition, and often, they lead to additional problems down the road. 


Instead of setting vague, unachievable resolutions, focus on setting SMART goals. SMART stands for:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time-bound

Setting SMART goals can keep you focused throughout the year without adding additional stress into your life.


2. The year progresses one day at a time 

When setting goals, remember that the new year is just like the old one — it progresses just a day at a time. While having a long-term plan in mind can be beneficial, make sure to see each day as a separate entity. 


Try your best to savor each moment of every day. When it comes to your goals, making the most of each day can help you achieve small victories throughout the entirety of the year.  


3. Good relationships are more important than ever

There’s a lot of ugliness in the world, and it seems like it becomes more apparent with each passing year. From political uncertainty and climate change to the continuation of the pandemic, 2022 will undoubtedly be full of hurdles. The best way to get through them isn’t through isolation — it’s by turning to your friends and family for support (remotely, if necessary). 


Make 2022 the year to prioritize the good and healthy relationships in your life. And on the flip side, don’t be afraid to walk away from draining or toxic ones!


4. It’s never too late to make lifestyle changes 

We tend to view different areas of our lives as cups of water — once a cup spills, it’s too late to clean up. However, that’s often not the case.


If you are trying to prioritize fitness, health, or make general lifestyle changes, avoid viewing your mission as a hopeless endeavor. It’s never too late to make changes and put yourself on a track to success. 


5. Make time for yourself 

At the end of the day, you need to ensure that you’re taking care of yourself. Self-care isn’t selfish — it’s an essential part of being human. 


Whether making the time for yourself has you reading, playing video games, doing yoga, or getting into skincare, ensure that you give yourself the time you need to be at your best. 

Make 2022 your year

While 2022 will almost certainly have its fair share of challenges and hurdles, you can arm yourself with the mindset you need to push through them.
