How to get your dream hair

If you’re not happy with your hair, you’re not alone. Back in 2017, the majority of women surveyed said that they wish they had someone else’s hair, or that they were simply unhappy with their own (1). If you wish you had different hair, it might be that your hair doesn’t seem healthy to you. You may see women walking down the street with shining, flowing locks and wish your hair could look the same way. Some of our hair’s make-up is genetic, but no matter what hair type you have, there are things you could do to help your hair. Read on for our tips for keeping your hair healthy and shiny, and soon your hair will be the envy on the street.

 

  • Protect your hair from heat
    • No matter how many times you’ve heard it, this tip cannot be emphasized enough. If you are using any heat on your hair, whether it be direct heat from a straightener or curler or indirect heat from a hairdryer, you’ll want to be sure to use a heat protectant. There are tons of great options on the market, but you’ll want to make sure you use a protectant that works for you. Some can go on dry or wet hair, so you’ll want to ensure your usage is covered (2).

  • Switch up your hairstyles
    • Putting your hair up the same way every day can lead to breakage, especially if it’s a tightly-tied hairstyle. So, it might be time to switch out your high pony that you love to wear to the gym. Repetitive hairstyles can lead to more breakage since the same hairs are being put under stress each time you redo your hair. When possible, wear your hair down. When it’s not, opt for loose styles, like a low bun, braid, or a claw clip style.

  • Use a leave-in conditioner
    • If your hair looks or feels dry, it might be because it is. Leave-in conditioners, to be used after a shower, can help your hair retain the moisture it needs to look healthy and shiny. Depending on your hair type, you can choose between a spray, oil, or serum (3).
  • Use a silk pillowcase
    • If you switch to a silk pillowcase, you can help prevent hair breakage while you sleep. On other fabrics, your hair may catch and break off in your sleep. No, it’s not a large amount of hair that can break off in this way. However, this is another small step you can take to better protect your hair so it can keep its shine and health.

  • Buy a boar bristle brush
    • You don’t need to use a boar bristle as your primary brush, but it’s definitely worth having on your bathroom counter. Boar bristle brushes help distribute the oils in your hair, which will help create the healthy shine we all desire. Plus, boar bristle brushes help pull away the dead hair that is on your head, so then you will be left only with the health strands once you brush (4).
